Pre-sessional English language courses: University telecollaboration as a driver of North/South student contact for engineers

by Dr. Bill Guariento (Assistant Professor, Northumbria University)

n.b. First published on 6th June 2020 on EAP for Social Justice SIG website, and re-published here on 27th March 2024 due to relevance to current situation in Gaza and the need for the development of collaborative educational initiatives to support Gazan students and HEIs more widely

Dr Bill Guariento is Programme Leader on the BA English Language & Linguistics at Northumbria University, and previously taught EAP at the University of Glasgow. His PhD looked at telecollaboration on EAP courses between universities in the Global North and South, with the Islamic University of Gaza (IUG) as the principal collaborator. His most recent work, with Caroline Burns (and colleagues at IUG and Northumbria), investigated Global South female engineering lecturers’ feelings about using English as a Medium of Instruction; this was interrupted by the war in Gaza. william.guariento@northumbria.ac.uk
